| Rolf Sachs - Furniture, Lighting and Objects | |
| This exhibition, 'Duality', marks a departure from Rolf Sachs' familiar signature of Deconstruction and Minimalism. He has embarked on an exploration into the emotional responses evoked by artefacts of his making. | |
Rather than simply relying on form to stir the viewers, he challenges and invites an experience of uneasiness with the Neon Light Immersion sculpture. A red neon condenser bulb is immersed in water and triggers an understandable reaction of danger. |
By using two everyday items, a wig (albeit handmade) and a glass bottle used by a chemist, Sachs has created the unnerving spookiness of the anthropomorphic Wig Lamp - Elisa, which unsettlingly suggests that the inanimate object is somehow possessed of a personality. Shrouded completely with a veil of human hair, it is the essence of feminine mystery. |
The voyeur in us too is aroused to snatch a furtive look into the Peephole Light, where a scene reminiscent of Manet's Dejeuner sur L'herbe awaits us. Miniature naked figures go about their daily business oblivious to the Peeping Tom. |

Under Sachs' constant scrutiny is the convention of uses associated with artefacts - the St. Moritzer Schlitten bench, hatched from his childhood memories, is a classic sledge, rescaled and brought into the living room. |

Likewise Z Stool Box is a humble fruit crate, beautifully re-crafted and again invited into the home as a stool, a table, a container, a multifunctional 'objet'... He welcomes the outside in and the inside out, and typically challenging our expectations, he positions the In Side Felt Deck, a tinkered with deck chair, right next to the fireplace. |
